JOHANNESBURG – The Democratic Republic of Congo has imposed a three-month suspension of mining activities in parts of the country's South Kivu province, a mines ministry directive showed.

The suspension was in response to illicit mining activities and will apply to the province's Mwenga and Shabunda territories, according to the directive issued on May 22 and signed by mines minister Louis Watum Kabamba.

During the suspension period, a special inspection mission led by the General Inspectorate of Mines will verify the legality of mining operations in the areas, the directive said.

Congo hopes to curb mining fraud and the illicit exploitation of ores in the province, it added.

Gold, tin ore cassiterite and hi-tech mineral coltan from South Kivu, in eastern Congo, are mostly mined by artisanal miners.

Last year, Congo banned the trading of minerals from dozens of artisanal mining sites in conflict-hit North and South Kivu provinces because of what it said was evidence that illegal supply from mines was financing armed groups in the east.

Congo is also home to some of the world's largest reserves of cobalt, copper and lithium.
